When Frying Those Latkes...

If you're concerned about fat intake, here's an important tip: To reduce the amount of oil you use in frying, be sure to get the pan and oil very hot before adding the food. The hotter the oil, the shorter the cooking time and therefore less fat will be absorbed by the food.

Caution-A hot, oily pan must be watched carefully!

A Great Gift Idea

Gift giving can be very difficult, especially if it's an in-law, boss, or business associate. Try this: Why not give to your, or their, favorite charity. Then, let the organization send a note saying that a donation has been made to them on their behalf. Share more than just the joy of another neck-tie or box of chocolate this gift giving season.

Stop the Erev Shabbos Kvetch

Do your kids complain about their erev Shabbos jobs? Here's a solution: Index cards! Write one job per index card (ex: clean table, sweep front hall), and let each child choose one to three cards. If you have different age kids, the cards will have to be age appropriate to all, and then you can have a separate pile for younger kids. Children love this method and don't feel as if you're favoring one or "letting one off easy." You can also add rewards and fun to the cards for example, "If you empty the trash you will earn a home baked cookie or a dime." For younger children you can say, "Put markers away and jump on one foot three times!"

Try this activity, you will be amazed at the participation you will receive.

Winter Tire Care

When the temperature drops, "Tires should be checked at least once a month because cold weather reduces your tire's inflation pressure," says Car Care Council's Chairman, Thomas E. Cole. "Driving on under inflated tires causes tire tread to wear faster and unevenly. Under inflated tires also reduce rise performance, affect vehicle handling, and decrease your vehicle's fuel efficiency. A tire is considered significantly under inflated when it is four or more pounds below the recommended tire pressure."

Irregular tire war can often be corrected by rotating your tires. Check your car owner's manual or consult the tire manufacturer for the appropriate rotation pattern for your vehicle. After rotation, adjust each tire's air pressure to the appropriate level for its new location, as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Also remember:
Take it easy on wet roads‹stopping on a wet road can take up to four times the normal distance it will take to stop on a dry road. Tires with shallow tread tend to hydroplane as speed increases, particularly over 40 mph.

The Council offers a tire care kit which includes an air pressure gauge, a tread depth gauge, four valve caps and a tire care brochure. To order a kit, send a check or money order for $4.00 to:

Snow flake Fun Take Advantage of a Snowy Day

Here's a great way to show children that no two snowflakes are identical! What's needed is a baking sheet, black piece of construction paper, and, if available, a magnifying glass.

Once the paper is cold (just stand outside for a few moments), allow the snowflakes to land on the paper, then try to find two flakes through the magnifying glass that look alike! You and your child/grandchild will be amazed-no two look the same!

Health over 50 Exercise Can Improve Posture

According to the John Hopkins Medical Letter, Health Over 50, "Back strengthening exercises can significantly improve posture in people with, 'dowager's hump' (thoracic kyphosis), according to a study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Researchers studying sixty post-menopausal women with the condition found that after two years, posture had improved in the thirty-two women who exercised, and worsened in the twenty-eight women who did not.
